Ruth Langsford joins Surrey walk for Alzheimer's

TV presenter Ruth Langsford walked for her mother, who is living with the disease, and in memory of her father

Ruth Langsford was among hundreds of fundraisers who took part in the Alzheimer's Society's Surrey memory walk at the weekend.

The This Morning and Loose Women presenter joined the event in Cobham on Saturday for her mother Joan, who is living with the disease, and in memory of her father Dennis.

Participants completed either a short 2km (1.2 miles) walk around Painshill Park or a longer 7km (4.3 miles) route.

Ms Langford said she found the event "so uplifting" and was "inspired by everyone coming together, all with a purpose to make a difference".

The TV presenter has taken part in the sponsored walk 14 times.

“I want to thank all those who shared their stories with me as we walked together. There was a huge sense of accomplishment and pride," she said.

The Alzheimer's Society said more than £64,000 had been raised so far by those who took part in the Surrey walk.

The cash will help to fund the charity's dementia support and research.

Dementia describes a set of symptoms that can affect memory, problem-solving, language and behaviour. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia.

There are about one million people living with dementia in the UK, including more than 147,000 in the south-east England, according to the charity.

Marion Child, its head of local services in the South East, said: “We are in awe of our incredible fundraisers and thank all those who took part in Surrey, as with every step and pound raised will make a huge difference to the lives of people living with dementia."
