Residents were evacuated from their homes after a suspected arson incident in Plymouth, police said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a scene guard remained in place at the former The Maritime Social Club, on Saltash Road, after the blaze happened on Monday.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was in the basement of the four-storey building.

It said residents were evacuated from the flats above the premises when the fire broke out at about 09:45 BST.

'Nobody hurt'

The fire service said the fire had been extinguished and the scene was made safe to allow residents to return to their homes.

Police said "nobody was hurt during the blaze", and that a road closure was in place.

The fire service said in an update on Tuesday: "Crews confirmed fire within the basement has been extinguished. The incident was sectorised and event decision logs and analytical risk assessments were completed."
