A family has paid tribute to a motorcyclist killed when a car swerved on to the wrong side of the road and hit him.

Relatives of John Murkin, 66, from Suffolk said he would "forever be missed" after his life was "tragically cut short" by the incident in Ardleigh, Essex in October 2023.

The 82-year-old driver of the car was jailed for causing death by dangerous driving after telling the court he was distracted by an unrestrained dog jumping on his lap.

Mr Murkin had been a heating engineer for more than 30 years, enjoyed riding bikes and was about to retire, his family said.

The tribute continued: "John had worked hard his entire life and tragically had it cut short just before retirement.

"He was well known for his skilled work, gaining many loyal customers and becoming well-known in the community.

"John was able to fix pretty much anything, rebuilding motorbikes and cars from a young age and was always happy to lend a hand to his friends and family.

"He enjoyed life, skiing, cycling, playing golf, visiting family and having a laugh with his friends."

Norman McAndrew, 82, of High Street, Colchester, was sentenced to three years in prison for causing his death at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday.
