A speedway club's first race back on track after almost two years has been cancelled due to weather issues.

The Mildenhall Fen Tigers, based at West Row, Suffolk, last raced in 2023 before sitting out the 2024 season due to "reduced competition" and a "large period of inactivity".

After months of planning, the club was due to race again on the track against Rye House from Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, on Saturday.

However organiser Steve Ribbons said heavy rain in recent days meant planned stadium maintenance could not be carried out in time.

Mr Ribbons said wooden panels and an air fence were due to be put up while track surface maintenance was due to be undertaken.

"It needs to be remembered that with no speedway on the West Row track for virtually two whole years now, this time period between now and Saturday was always going to crucial to us," he said.

"The last thing we needed then was this spell of very heavy rain, which has meant we've needed to take the decision, extremely reluctantly, to call time on these efforts."

Mr Ribbons said it was "clear" the work could not be carried out in "the time scale we had because of the adverse weather conditions".

He apologised to fan - and refunds were being issued.

Club co-ordinator, Kieran Phillips, added that the club wanted to "deliver a quality product" and the weather meant this might not have happened.

He thanked fans for their patience.

The opening meeting will now be held on 20 September against the Isle of Wight Warriors.
