Two men have been killed while glass was being unloaded near a non-league football ground.

Hertfordshire Police was called to Hitchin Town Football Club after reports that two men had been seriously injured while unloading glass panels from a lorry in the overflow car park at about 14:00 BST on Saturday.

The force said two men died near the ground and a third had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

In a statement the club said the "tragic accident" took place on its land adjacent to the football ground on Fishponds Road and it offered sincere condolences to the men's families.

East of England Ambulance Service confirmed it had sent two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer vehicle, a critical care paramedic car and a community first responder to the scene.

The wooden-boarded entrance features a green and yellow sign saying "HITCHIN TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB" above the narrow turnstile doors. There is a pavement, litter bin and lamp-post in front of the entrance, which has trees behind the fencing on either side of the entrance.Image source, Google

"At this stage we know very little about the actual details of the accident and the police have taken control and their inquiries are ongoing," the club said.

The team, which plays in the Southern League Division One Central, did not have a home match at the weekend.

Martello, a haulage company, confirmed it had been delivering a container to the ground, but was not responsible for opening the container or offloading.

A spokesperson said: "We have very few details of the incident. We don't know if they were employees or how it happened."

Police said the deaths were currently being investigated.
