A man and a woman who died when their car was in collision with a lorry on the A500 in Cheshire were from Stoke-on-Trent, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a section of the road at Barthomley, near Crewe, at about 18:30 GMT on Saturday and it remained closed until just before 13:00 on Sunday.
Cheshire Police said the 76-year-old man, who was driving a Ford Kuga, and a 63-year-old woman, who was his passenger, both died at the scene.
The force said their next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.
The A500 was closed between the M6 junction 16 and the Meremoor Moss Roundabout at Weston, to allow highways engineers to make it safe.
The police force said it was investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision.
