Council to decide on free seafront skatepark plan

Plans for a new seafront skatepark in Margate backed by the artist Tracey Emin will be considered by councillors.

The proposals for a facility at Ethelbert Crescent, in Cliftonville, will be discussed by Thanet District Council's cabinet on Thursday.

The project, which is part of the £22m Margate Town Deal, has a current funding allocation of £984,000, including an offer of up to £100,000 from Emin who grew up nearby.

A council spokesperson said the skatepark is envisioned as a "community recreation space" and will "regenerate" the seafront site.

Plans for the site also include new public toilets and a refreshment kiosk.

The skatepark will be free to access and open to all, a spokesperson said.

Councillor Ruth Duckworth, cabinet member for regeneration and property, said: “The Margate skatepark is a very popular project and has the potential to be a space that the entire community can use and be proud of.

“At a time when so much of the provision, particularly for our local young people, is under threat this will be a welcome addition to the recreational facilities in the district."
