A new community garden is to open in Blackpool for residents who do not have their own green space.

Layton Library’s hidden garden will open on Wednesday afternoon with a variety of activities for children.

Prince’s Trust volunteers created a story circle and planting beds, while Blackpool Sixth Form art students designed and painted two large murals.

Chair of the committee behind the project, councillor John Boughton, said it had taken "a lot of planning" but it was now "a wonderful space".

'Usable and accessible'

The idea behind the project was to make the hidden space behind Layton library - which was previously overgrown - usable and accessible.

Visitors can sign up to be a volunteer, or just enjoy the space, which will be open when the library is open.

Councillor Jo Farrell, Blackpool Council cabinet member for levelling-up people said: “The garden is a great addition to the library and I hope that it will encourage more residents to visit and enjoy all the library has to offer."
