A fire has broken out at the Royal Free Hospital site in Hampstead.

About 60 firefighters are tackling the blaze, with the roof of a recreation building on the hospital site currently alight, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

It said eight fire engines were at the scene and one of its 32m (105ft) ladders had been deployed to fight the fire from above.

LFB added the cause of the fire was not known, but traffic in the area would be "heavily impacted" as crews continue to battle the blaze, which is now under control.

LFB said it was first called about the fire at 11:15 GMT and was under control by 12:50.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 11:32 GMT to reports of a fire in Fleet Road.

"We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews and an incident response officer. The first of our crews arrived in six minutes.

"Our crews assisted our emergency services partners at the scene, but were later stood down."

A Royal Free London spokesperson thanked LFB for responding quickly to the fire.
