A man and woman who were arrested after a baby was taken to hospital in a serious condition have been released on bail.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said they attended an address on Dairy Crest Drive in Newport, on the Isle of Wight, on Friday after a child was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Newport, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Both have been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

Insp Oly Greenhowe urged people not to speculate online about what might have happened.

"Speculation and the spread of rumours are not only unhelpful but they can actively hinder the progress of our investigation," he said.

He urged anyone with relevant information to contact police directly.

Insp Greenhowe added: "This is understandably a troubling incident for the community and we want to reassure residents that a dedicated team of officers is actively working to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened."
