Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is to relocate to a new space after receiving £77,000 in funding.

The museum has been operating from a temporary space at Buxton Library since structural concerns saw its former building in Terrace Road closed in June 2023 and later sold.

Derbyshire County Council said the Arts England funding would allow it to move to a more suitable self-contained space at the library site in Kents Bank Road.

The authority added it was still working to find a new permanent space for the museum.

Buxton Museum and Art Gallery showcases history, geology and archaeology, mainly from the Peak District and Derbyshire area, with 100,000 items in its collection.

It has received £72,000 from the Museum Renewal Fund and a further £5,000 from Museum Development Midlands/Arts Council England for the move.

The council said it was hoped the new space would be open to visitors by Christmas.

Dawn Abbott, cabinet member for health and communities, said: "We are continuing to work with partners to secure a new permanent home in the heart of the town for the museum, art gallery and the library, but in the meantime we are working hard to ensure we can offer the best that we can to the people of Buxton and its visitors."
