Four tennis courts in Derbyshire will be brought back to life thanks to a £119,000 investment.

Amber Valley Borough Council and The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have teamed up to refurbish the facilities at Alfreton Recreation Ground, off Grange Street.

Improvements will also be made to the accessibility and security of the site, including a new digital gate system.

The courts were last used for tennis 15 years ago.

The council said it aimed to complete the project by May, weather permitting.

The refurbishment is part of a nationwide investment by the UK government and LTA Tennis Foundation to make tennis more accessible and enjoyable.

As part of this, weekly free sessions will be held for all ages, playing levels and experience, with equipment provided.

Once the refurbishment is complete, players can book online via the LTA website.

There will also be one netball court marked out, which will be available to book.

Julie Porter, LTA chief operating officer, said: "We are delighted to be working with [the council] to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active."
