Businesses are being encouraged to develop tech-driven solutions to help older people in Jersey live independently and safely.
Impact Jersey said it was launching a £2m grant programme, funded by the government and delivered by Digital Jersey, for innovators developing solutions to improve the lives of older people.
It said the technology needed to reduce hospitalisations, help people live independently at home and stay connected to communities for longer.
The government said the number of islanders aged 65 and above was predicted to increase by 58% within the next 25 years, with the cost of caring for the older community to "outstrip" its long-term care fund., external
Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, said he hoped it would create positive long-term change.
"Impact Jersey is designed to help solve the biggest challenges we are facing as an island through digital technologies, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the innovative solutions that emerge from this challenge and the value they can add to our community," he said.
Tony Moretta, CEO, Digital Jersey, said it would address "significant demographic and healthcare challenges Jersey is set to experience over the coming decades".
He said: "This initiative provides a real opportunity to demonstrate how technology can address local challenges, prevent ill-health and social exclusion, maintain people’s independence and help alleviate pressure on Jersey’s health and care system."
