Drivers warned Tyne Tunnel to close in one direction
- Published
Drivers are being warned that a section of the Tyne Tunnel is set to close over the bank holiday weekend for maintenance.
The northbound tunnel will be closed from 20:00 BST on Friday until 06:00 on Tuesday.
While work is taking place, the southbound tunnel will operate in both directions.
Tyne Tunnels said it would work to "minimise traffic disruption" during the closure.
Those travelling on the south side of the river are being told they will need to follow diversion signs that allow them to "cross over to the southbound carriageway".
Those driving on the north side of the river will travel through the tunnel in the left lane, before cones and diversion signs guide them back to the northbound carriageway.
More people are expected to use the Tyne Tunnel while work to restore the Tyne Bridge is taking place.
The road over the bridge has been reduced to one lane in each direction, and drivers have been warned to expect delays of up to 40 minutes at peak times.
