A multi-storey car park in Leicester city centre is to close for a weekend to allow "essential maintenance" to be carried out.

Newarke Street car park, which is accessed by vehicles from York Road, will be shut from 15:00 BST on Friday to 06:30 on Monday.

Leicester City Council said anyone already parked in the car park will be able to exit until 01:30 on Saturday before work starts.

The authority said the planned maintenance over Saturday and Sunday would include work to the car park's flooring and repairing potholes.

The council said signs will be on display warning drivers of the closures, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported.

Ashley Snookes, the authority's traffic and parking manager, said: "We need to carry out essential repairs to the flooring throughout this busy and well-used car park.

"The only way we can safely do this is by closing it to all vehicles for a couple of days while the work is completed.

"We will be working hard to keep any disruption and inconvenience to a minimum."

The authority added other council-managed car parks in the city centre, including the Haymarket multi-storey car park, would be open as normal.
