Two men have appeared in court charged with raping a woman in York.

Fahim Khan, 18, and Zaid Zahir, 20, were arrested following an incident in the Piccadilly and North Street area of the city between 03:30 BST and 04:00 BST on Wednesday.

Mr Khan, of Thorpe Lane, Cawood, and Mr Zahir, of Roseberry Street, York, each face a single charge of rape, but did not enter a plea during the hearing at York Magistrates' Court.

The pair were remanded into custody to appear at York Crown Court on 23 September.

Police had previously said the female complainant was being supported by specially trained officers.

The force had also said additional officers would be on patrol in the city centre into the weekend to "provide extra reassurance to members of the public".
