A man has died after a car plunged into the sea off the Isle of Wight.

The Ford Mondeo went into the water off Shore Road, Gurnard, near the village sailing club on Saturday shortly before 23:30 GMT.

Police said the car's driver, a man in his 40s from Ryde, died at the scene. His family has been informed.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has appealed for witnesses, with officers carrying out inquiries "to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident".

Police, ambulance, fire and the coastguard services were at Gurnard beach overnight.

The force said the man was the only person inside the vehicle.
