Ice hockey player detained for raping teenager

A former amateur Dundee ice hockey player who raped a teenage girl in his car after picking her up from a sleepover has been detained for four-and-a-half years.
Darren Donaldson, 19, from Dyce, Aberdeen targeted the victim when she was heavily intoxicated and incapable of giving consent.
The court heard Donaldson first met the victim, who was under the age of 16, through his friends and Dundee Comets teammates.
A non-harassment order, banning Donaldson from contacting or attempting to contact the victim, was also granted for a period of 15 years.
Donaldson was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow after being found guilty in September following a trial.
The trial was told he attended the house where the girl was staying in August 2022 but was refused entry.
Due to her level of intoxication, the victim was put to bed by friends a short while later.
Donaldson later collected the victim from the property and drove to an address in Perth and Kinross where he raped her.
The accused, who was 17 at the time, then drove the victim back to her friend’s house.
She woke up the following day and began having flashbacks before the attack was reported to the police.
When asked about the impact of his actions on the girl he said she could have been a "bit upset".
He claimed the girl and others had conspired against him.
Judge Lord Scott said it appeared Donaldson still believed he had done nothing wrong.
The judge said: "You seem to think you are the victim. The continuing support of your family is not a protective factor here.
"They do not believe you are guilty as "you are not like that" - whatever that is.
"The jury decided you are exactly like that."
Donaldson was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
