A man in his 30s has been arrested after threats were made with a firearm in a city centre.

Police were called at about 10:15 GMT to reports of a man making a threat with a gun in a shop in Gloucester before making off on a bicycle.

Armed police were deployed and Barton Street was closed while officers searched for the suspect, who was later arrested in Spa Road.

Insp Ash Gardner, from Gloucester Neighbourhood Policing Team, called the incident "terrifying for those involved".

Insp Garner added: "We have acted quickly to locate and arrest an individual in connection with this incident.

"Officers will be patrolling the area in order to reassure the public and will be happy to talk to anyone who has any concerns."

During their search, officers spotted the suspect in Gloucester Park before arresting him in Spa Road on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and robbery.

An imitation firearm was later recovered at a Gloucester property.

Gloucestershire Police said nobody was believed to have been physically injured.

The arrested man remains in custody while enquiries continue.
