Farmer says controversial roaming pigs are 'good fun'

Kevin Filby says part of the problem is people forgetting to close the gates or tampering with fences

The farmer of a gang of boisterous pigs who roam free in a market town has said they are "good fun" and a "positive thing" for the community.
The escapades of the pigs, which roam through Aylsham in Norfolk, have been well documented. However, while a group on Facebook has more than 500 members, not all residents are in support.
The pigs belong to DW Filby & Sons, which is located off Marriott's Way — a 26-mile footpath which runs to Norwich.
Mr Filby told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the pigs were due to be relocated next week.
The farmer claims there has been regular tampering of his fences and said there was an ignorance of the countryside code by walkers who neglect to properly secure the gates.
Charlotte Fonesca, who frequently encounters pigs on the path, said: "It could be dangerous if they got on to the main road and it stops parts of the way being used.
"It would be helpful if the farmer had signs up advising on who to call when we see a loose pig, as there is no way to contact them and even when they are made aware the pigs seem to remain out for days."

One member of the public complained a pig had charged at them, whereas other incidents included the animals being escorted back to the farm.
Another resident said there were serious concerns for public safety and a "strong feeling" the activity had "spoiled" the countryside with the path having an "unbearable smell".
Mr Filby said: "It's all in good fun and safe for the public. People enjoy seeing the pigs - it's a positive thing for the community. It brings smiles, and it's harmless."
He said they liked to explore but were not a threat.
"People exaggerate because it's unusual, but it's not dangerous. If people see a pig walking around, the best thing to do is contact us," he said.
Aylsham Town Council has declined to comment on the matter.
