'No peace' for murder victim's family 24 years on
- Published
The family of a woman murdered almost a quarter of a century ago say they are living in "horror" with no one having been brought to justice for her death.
Vicky Glass was last seen being dropped off by a taxi driver in Middlesbrough at about 04:00 BST on 24 September 2000, three days after her 21st birthday.
Her body was found six weeks later in a stream in Danby, North Yorkshire.
A number of arrests were made at the time but no-one has ever been charged.
In a statement released to mark the anniversary of Ms Glass's disappearance, her sister, Claire, said the family should have been writing 45th birthday cards to Vicky, but were instead "praying for someone to come forward with information".
She described the unresolved situation as "despairing", "haunting" and "all-consuming".
"As a family, the horror we live everyday eats away at us.
"It has now been 24 years since Vicky was murdered.
"This does not go away for us, it gets worse. It has broken our hearts and eats into our lives every minute of every day. We cannot rest.
"Vicky has no justice, we have no peace - we have an unending void of complete unrest and turmoil, that is why we are asking, once again, that if you have any information, to pass this on to the police - anonymously if that is the way you need to do it."
She said her family "live with the horror of having to imagine how scared Vicky was in her last moments" and with the pain of her mother having died without knowing who killed her youngest daughter.
'Desperate for answers'
Ms Glass was last seen at about 04:20 BST on Middlesbrough's Union Street, at the junction with Eshwood Square, said Det Chief Inspector Peter Carr, of Cleveland Police.
"Vicky was only 21 yearsold when she was murdered, and had her whole life ahead of her," he said.
"Her family are desperate for answers - and justice.
"Someone out there must know something about her murder, and I would urge anyone with information to come forward."
The force conducted reviews of the case in 2021 and 2022, with police officers returning to Danby.
Attempts were made to identify a lorry driver who was seen with Ms Glass hours before her disappearance, following the discovery of CCTV evidence.
Officers previously said Ms Glass had felt pressurised into sex work to fund a heroin addiction, and they were continuing to investigate this line of inquiry.
