Plans for hotel accommodation in a Grade II listed building have been submitted.

Sunderland City Council's planning department has received an application for the property in John Street in the city's Hendon ward.

The building had most recently been occupied by a law firm.

In planning documents, the applicant said there was a "growing demand for high quality visitor accommodation within the city centre".

The developer said the plans would support the local authority's "broader regeneration objectives by bring a heritage asset back into active use", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external.

Permission is being sought to convert the site from offices to "hotel or guest accommodation" as well as the installation of new "conservation-style" rooflights.

A decision on the plans is expected later this year following a council consultation exercise.
