A popular Derbyshire visitor attraction will cut its entrance fee for people on benefits.

More than 600,000 people each year visit Chatsworth House, former home of the Duke of Devonshire, paying £35 each.

Now, a limited number of £3 tickets, which give access to the house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground, are available to those on support like Universal Credit and Pension Credit.

Managers at the Chatsworth House Trust (CHT) said they are always looking at ways to "remove barriers to visiting".

Chatsworth has been owned by the Cavendish family since 1549 but the house has been rebuilt several times, and a £32.7m restoration was completed in 2012.

While it is still owned by the family, the estate is leased to the CHT which is a registered charity.

Discounted adult tickets are priced at £3, with children aged 3-16 paying £1.

The move follows a successful trial period and the offer will now be available until November.

Reduced price tickets must be booked in advance and may sell out on some days, managers said.

Paul Hayes, head of visitor strategy at the CHT, said: “As a charity that is dedicated to preserving Chatsworth for everyone to enjoy, accessibility is one of our main priorities, and we are always looking at new ways to remove barriers to visiting.

"We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience Chatsworth if they would like to, and we hope these tickets will allow even more people to do just that.”

Qualifying benefits include:

  • Universal Credit

  • Pension Credit

  • Working Tax Credit

  • Child Tax Credit

  • Employment and Support Allowance

  • Income Support

  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
