Five people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash involving a minibus.

The incident happened on the M5 northbound at junction 12 for Quedgeley, just south of Gloucester, at about 02:15 BST.

A 35-year-old man is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving and driving whilst unfit, Gloucestershire Police said.

The people injured in the crash are now in a stable condition and sustained injuries not deemed to be life-threatening, the force added.

Several emergency crews were in attendance, including Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service.

Gloucestershire Police and National Highways also attended the scene to help manage traffic and clear the road.

The motorway was closed for a number of hours after the crash, but has since reopened.

A further lane closure is planned for 12:00 BST to allow for the Ford Tourneo minibus to be recovered from an area of undergrowth after leaving the road.

Gloucestershire Police is appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage of the crash to come forward.
