Roads to close for return of Southern 100 races

Roads in the south of the Isle of Man are set to close later for the first round of qualifying at the Southern 100 road races.

A total of 12 races are scheduled for the 2024 meeting on the Billown Circuit, which runs until 11 July.

The roads affected are the Castletown Bypass, Ballakaighan Road, Ballakeighan Corner, Castletown Road, Douglas Road and Malew Road.

Evening closures are set to take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with a daytime closure scheduled for Thursday.

Racing at the 2023 races was cancelled following a fatal accident during qualifying for the event.

Drone ban

The most successful TT rider of all time, Michael Dunlop, is signed up to compete at the event, alongside the 2024 Senior TT winner Davy Todd.

Manx double TT sidecar winners Ryan and Callum Crowe will also take part on the 4.2-mile (6.8km) course.

Evening closures, which run between 18:05 and 21:40 BST, will see qualifying on Monday and Tuesday, with racing set to begin during the second session.

Wednesday will see racing continue, while the event will culminate with the daytime races on Thursday.

Road closures will initially be in place between 09:30 and 12:45, with a second closure between 13:30 and 16:45.

Production company Greenlight TV has been granted permission to film the event using one drone in area between the Iron Gate to Ballabeg Hairpin.

However, the organisers have "respectfully reminded" spectators the personal use of the devices near the course remains banned.
