A busy city centre street is to be closed to traffic for about 10 weeks as the next phase of a major revamp takes place.

Granby Street, Leicester, will be closed between its junctions with Chatham Street and Belvoir Street from Monday, the city council said.

The authority said it planned to widen pavements into parking bays, which were closed during the Covid pandemic, to create an area suitable for outdoor cafe seating.

Additional on-street parking will be created on nearby Chatham Street, York Street and Calais Street on Sunday, the council added.

The first phase of the Granby Street revamp, on the stretch near the railway station, was completed earlier this year.

A council spokesperson said: "A final phase of work – currently planned for early next year – will also permanently close the junction of Dover Street and Granby Street to motor vehicles to help further improve pedestrian safety.

"The city council plans to create a new turning facility on Dover Street, to maintain access for general traffic to nearby businesses and attractions, including The Little Theatre."
