Redevelopment work is to begin in Crewe town centre as part of a project to build a new history centre in the town.

Site preparation works are to start to demolish the former library and a deck over the civic centre car park.

Plans to move the county’s archives, currently based in Chester, and open two purpose-built centres in Chester and Crewe were approved earlier this year.

The history centre in Crewe is set to open in summer 2025.

Cheshire East Council said the plans in Crewe would create improved pedestrian links between the Lifestyle Centre and Memorial Square.

A new entrance to the magistrates’ court and a new car park are also set to be built.

Work on the history centre building is set to begin in the spring.

It is part of a series of developments in Crewe town centre.

Work on the first phase of the Royal Arcade scheme, which includes a new bus station and multi-storey car park, is under way.

But a second phase has been scaled back, with the scrapping of HS2 cited as one of the reasons by Cheshire East Council.
