Shrewsbury's main swimming pool is due to reopen on 13 December after a lengthy closure because of damage to its roof.

The Quarry pool was forced to close in July 2022 after panelling came loose.

Repairs and improvements to ventilation and other aspects of the building have cost £400,000, Shropshire Council said.

It was also closed for a period in 2020 after Storm Ciara.

Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, which operates the leisure centre on behalf of the council, described the refurbishment as a "long road", but added it was "excited" for the reopening.

"New windows and a fresh coat of paint have made the pool light and bright and we have been able to give the changing rooms a refresh by re-purposing equipment from the old Whitchurch Swimming Centre, which is about to be rebuilt," said Rhys Collins from the trust.

Plans for a rebuild of the Quarry pool, and a new one in the Sundorne area of Shrewsbury, were put on hold last year to prioritise the Whitchurch project.
