A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Gateshead, police have said.

The 42-year-old man was hit by a black Volkswagen Golf on the A695 Ryton, between Woodside Lane and Stargate Lane.

Northumbria Police received a report of the collision just after 06:10 GMT on Wednesday.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene to assist the police, they said.

'Tragic'

The 42-year-old was pronounced dead a short time after emergency services arrived.

The road was closed in both directions for about five hours.

Sgt Steve Chappell at Northumbria Police said: “This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can.”

Northumbria Police has appealed for witnesses who saw the collision, or who may have any relevant dashcam footage of either vehicle or the pedestrian prior to the collision, to contact the force.
