Three walkers had to be saved by a mountain rescue team after getting into trouble during a Peak District trek.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) said it was called out at about 20:00 GMT on Saturday after the trio became lost while attempting a route between Downfall and Crowden Clough on the Kinder plateau.

Rescuers used mobile phone technology to locate the walkers, who they said were cold, wet and struggling to walk.

They were taken back to the mountain team's base and given warm drinks before being driven back to their own cars.

'Knee-deep mud'

KMRT said: "The route description said it was moderately difficult but didn’t mention that there isn't a path between these points and given that it has been raining heavily for weeks, large parts of this area consists of boggy peat.

"The temperature was cold and there was snow lying on the ground. The group had become disorientated and were now cold, wet and lost in the dark.

"Every route they attempted placed them in knee-deep mud, so they called for our help."
