Island causeway condition sparks improvement call
The Balesear causeway is often overtopped by waves and debris

Councillors in the Western Isles have been urged to make significant improvements to a causeway in the islands.
The Balesear causeway links the tidal island, which is home to about 60 residents, to North Uist.
Residents say it is often closed due to high tides and overtopping waves, and say it is not safe to cross at times.
Members of a local group campaigning for improvements met with councillors from the local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, on Thursday.
Since its construction in 1962, upgrades have been limited, and rocks which were added to one side of the causeway in 2000 have slipped away, leaving large parts of it exposed.
Campaigners said it was a positive thing for councillors to see first-hand their concerns about the situation.
Council convener Kenneth Macleod said that efforts had been made previously to secure levelling up funding which had been unsuccessful, but that he hoped other funding opportunities for causeways would arise.
