Community groups and independent businesses are being invited to apply for grants of up to £500 to pay for projects to improve their area.

A total of £10,000 is being allocated in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund over the next two years.

The scheme is being administered by Urban Wilderness CIC, which has been based in the town since 2019.

“We know that there are lots of people putting a lot of effort into helping Longton thrive," co-director Isla Telford said.

'Breathe new life'

"And this fund offers a way for organisations to try out brilliant ideas without being out of pocket.”

Jane Ashworth, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said the scheme would help breathe new life into Longton.

“It will also help to bring increased footfall to the town centre, helping local businesses,” she said.

MP Jack Brereton said Urban Wilderness had made a significant contribution to the area.

"I hope this additional funding for local community groups will make a big difference in further supporting and strengthening communities across our city," he said.

The CIC hopes Longton will soon be known as a centre for cultural and community-led initiatives.

The organisation is behind projects such as the town's carnival and Pig Walk Parade.

Applications for the first round of funding are open until 16 February, while a second round is expected to open in May.
