People living in Jersey have been offered the chance to have a diabetes test for free.

Coop Pharmacy said with the support of Diabetes Jersey it had put on the free screenings to "promote early detection" and raise awareness as part of World Diabetes Day.

The pharmacy said about 4,500 people currently lived with type two diabetes in Jersey.

Sara Kynicos, head of care at Coop Pharmacy, said: "The simple test could save a life, and by offering free screenings we hope to raise awareness of the symptoms and risks associated with diabetes and encourage early diagnosis."

The pharmacy firm said screenings would take place at Grand Marché in St Helier on 13 November and Grand Marché, St Peter on 14 November between 09:00 and 17:00 GMT.

It said no appointments were needed for the screenings, which would take about about five to ten minutes.

Trained pharmacists will be available to interpret results, provide education on diabetes management, and address any concerns, it added.

Peter Tabb of Diabetes Jersey said: "The free testing being offered by the CI Coop is one of the most valuable exercises in helping the charity raise the profile of the condition and we are very grateful for that."
