A planning application for a multimillion-pound leisure facility and community hub in south Cumbria has been submitted.

Cumberland Council said the proposed building in Millom would improve local health and boost footfall in the town.

The centre is one of four projects that make up the Millom Town Deal, which secured £20.6m from the UK Government's Town's Fund alongside a further £8.7m in match funding.

The authority said it was hoped work on the centre would begin in early 2025., external

Plans for the centre include a swimming pool, sports hall and fitness studios.

David Savage, chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: "This long-awaited news will build confidence that the leisure complex is actively moving forward and will significantly contribute to this town's offer as an attractive place to live, work and visit."
