A drunk driver who went through red lights in Nottingham city centre before crashing into parked cars has been sentenced.

Declan Muers was seen speeding along Maid Marian Way by police just after 04:00 GMT on 18 February.

The 27-year-old was then seen to go through five sets of red lights before crashing into two parked cars in Hungerhill Road, St Ann's.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, Muers was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop when required by a police constable and drink-driving.

Police said Muers blew a reading of 49 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Muers, of Irene Terrace, Nottingham, was also disqualified from driving for two years, given a four-month curfew and ordered to complete 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

PC Fraser Heaton said: "Muers showed a clear disregard for the safety of others by driving dangerously through a city centre in poor weather conditions.

"He was in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car and it is fortunate he didn't cause harm to another road user or pedestrian."
