Two women in their 70s have suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after they were hit by a van.

The white Ford Transit van was being reversed on Lowbourne, Melksham, at about 13:30 BST on Saturday when it hit the pedestrians.

Wiltshire Police said a 25-year-old man, from Melksham, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving. He has since been bailed.

The two women were taken to hospital, where they both remain in a potentially life-threatening condition, police said.

The force said it was awaiting evidential samples and further inquires were being carried out.

Sgt James Twyford said: "This was a serious incident which has resulted in two elderly women suffering potentially life-threatening injuries.

"We have already spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene and we would like to thank the public for their support with this investigation," he added.

Sgt Twyford urged anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police.
