A council has apologised after getting their distances wrong on a street sign.

Rather than stating that Downham and Rimington were respectively one and three miles away from Chatburn, a newly installed sign in the Lancashire village mixed up the distances.

While some people living in the village, near Clitheroe, have seen the funny side, others have been decidedly unimpressed, with one man saying it was "crackers" and a "waste".

Lancashire County Council said it was "aware of an error" and stressed it would be corrected.

Resident Eddie Gilchrist posted on Facebook: "Oh dear, LCC installed a shiny new sign in Chatburn yesterday. Unfortunately, they have moved both Rimington and Downham."

In 2022, the authority was left red-faced when it misspelled a new bus stop sign outside Lancaster Royal Grammar School as "grammer", much to the amusement of the headteacher and students.

A county council spokesman said: "We're aware of an error on a new road sign in Bridge Road, Chatburn and have arranged for it to be corrected.

"We appreciate residents bringing it to our attention."

The original sign shows two signs pointing to the left saying "Downham 1, Rimington 3" on one and "Methodist Church" on one below it. There is a brown sign with a white witch icon underneath and also one to the right under another sign pointing to the right saying "Gisburn 5".Image source, Google
