Homes in a Hertfordshire town were evacuated after a suspicious object was found.

Police were called to Cowley Hill in Borehamwood at about 12:15 BST on Saturday.

Several roads were closed while the object was dealt with by the bomb squad.

Late in the evening, Hertfordshire Police said controlled explosions were carried out before people were allowed to return home. A cordon was still in place on Cowley Hill on Sunday.

Hertsmere Borough Council set up a reception area for residents at a community centre in Shenley Road during the incident.
