Libraries to close for refurbishment scheme

Two libraries are to close as part of a £500,000 refurbishment to modernise the buildings and make them more energy efficient.
Barnsley Council said the work would help transform Darfield and Goldthorpe libraries into modern and flexible spaces.
Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said they had made “great progress” since they began refurbishing libraries as part of the Barnsley Library Strategy.
“We remain committed to creating welcoming, exciting and sustainable places where people can meet, learn, study and work,” she said.
Darfield Library is due to close on 24 September and Goldthorpe on 25 September, with the work expected to be completed early next year.
The refurbishment is funded by a £506,836 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity fund.
The council said extra support would be offered to those who need it during the closures.
It advised those who are not able to get to another library in the area to register with the free Home Library Service, which delivers books to people's homes.
