A man described as "a danger to women" has been jailed for physically abusing a woman over several years, causing extensive bruising and facial injuries which he blamed on a dog.

Charlie Daniel Clowes, 55, of Bedale, had denied intentional strangulation, assault causing actual bodily harm and assault by beating but was found guilty at York Crown Court on 28 June.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to three years in prison and given a 15-year restraining order.

Police said Clowes had shown no remorse, denying the offences during interviews and throughout the trial – at one point claiming the dog had caused the injuries and the victim had fallen up the stairs.

Concerns were first raised for the safety of the woman after she was seen with visible injuries. Police said she had shown “immense bravery” in coming forward.

Investigating officer PC Harry Fearn said: “The victim endured serious assaults at the hands of Clowes for several years but was too afraid to come forward out of fear of repercussions.”

He said Clowes was "a danger to women” and said no-one should have to live in fear.

“The court heard and saw the significant physical and emotional harm Clowes had inflicted on the victim and her courage in providing the evidence should not be underestimated,” he added

“Clowes now has ample time in prison to reflect on what he has done and take every opportunity to change his behaviour.”
