Plans announced to 'significantly improve' market place

A council is seeking to "significantly improve" a Derbyshire market place by building a pavilion on the site.
Shirebrook Town Council has partnered with Bolsover District Council to create a brand new pavilion building at Shirebrook Market Place as part of a project for the site, called REimagined.
The councils hope the building will provide the market place with a café, tourist information centre, public toilets, stall storage and a market supervisor office.
With the addition of the pavilion, both councils want Shirebrook Market Place to become an "important civic space, more vibrant and welcoming, and the retail beating heart of Shirebrook".
Works to create memorial gardens at Shirebrook Market Place began in June.
A design and access statement for the proposed pavilion said it is designed with a tall corner feature creating a ‘lofty’ café space, while also creating a ‘memory of the distinctive pithead form’.
Architects for the project, Lathams, said the new pavilion building will "respond to its context and history through its form and materials".
They said the charred timber cladding will reflect the mining history of the town and respond to the dark colours of the memorial in the square.
They added the colour of the windows and doors will also reflects the bronze of the Shirebrook Colliery memorial located on the site.
A planning notice was put in place on 13 August and any comments or objections to the plans should be submitted to Bolsover District Council within 21 days.
