A man has been arrested and a child taken to hospital following a crash that partly closed a motorway.

The multi-vehicle collision took place on the A1(M) northbound carriageway at about 06:21 GMT on Monday between junction eight, for Stevenage, and junction nine, for Letchworth.

Hertfordshire Police said a driver of a Renault Megane was arrested in connection with the crash and taken to hospital for treatment.

A child who was in the same vehicle has also been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said six people were assessed at the scene and the child and adult were taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage for further care.

The northbound carriageway remained closed while an oil spill that followed the crash was cleaned up with a diversion route put in place.

The road fully reopened at about 04:45 on Tuesday after almost 24 hours when the repairs were completed, National Highways said on X, external.
