The woman, in her 20s, was walking her dachshund on the beach at Sizewell at about 08:00 BST on Tuesday when it was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terrier-type dogs, Suffolk Police said.

The woman was injured trying to separate the dogs, but her own pet died as a result of the attack.

She also stressed the importance of keeping dogs under control.

"Officers are investigating the incident and working with partners to ensure dogs are controlled appropriately in the area and that all that use the beach and surrounding area are safe," Insp Casey said.

"Please be aware it is your responsibility to ensure your dog is controlled and that it does not endanger the safety of any others."

Suffolk Police has appealed for any witnesses to the incident to get in touch.

Other dog walkers in the area have described the incident as "terrible".

Henrietta Palmer said the beach was "usually" very safe.

"Most of that bring their dogs here are pretty responsible," she added.

"I'll be careful but it doesn't mean I'll put my dog on a lead all the time - I don't necessarily think it makes it safer."
