A 15-year-old boy has died after the scooter he was riding crashed into a street sign in Hemsworth.

The Yamaha Delight 125cc scooter, which also had other teenagers on it at the time of the crash, hit the sign as it travelled around a right-hand bend on Market Street, near the junction with Tesco, at about 01:21 BST on Thursday, West Yorkshire Police said.

The boy suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he died shortly afterwards.

Two other boys, aged 15 and 16, who were also believed to have been riding on the scooter, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

A full road closure was put in place for recovery and investigative work to be carried out.

Det Insp Paul Conroy said: "Extensive investigations remain ongoing into this very serious collision which has sadly resulted in a young teenage male losing his life.

"Officers will be supporting his family as we investigate the circumstances of what took place."

He asked anyone who saw the scooter being ridden in the Market Street area or near the Tesco superstore before the crash, or who has any footage of the incident, to contact the force.
