Sixteen people have been arrested in a car park while allegedly on their way to work illegally on a solar farm.

The group was stopped by Beanacre Road in Melksham, Wiltshire on Friday 26 September.

In a statement, the Home Office said: "Supported by Wiltshire Police, the 16 Romanian nationals were arrested in a car park on Beanacre Road in Melksham while reportedly on their way to collect payment for illegally working on a solar farm in Scotland."

It added that all the group had "breached visitor visa conditions" and 14 are in custody and face deportation.

The remaining two face "strict reporting conditions", the Home Office added.

Head of West of England Immigration Enforcement, Murad Mohammed, thanked Wiltshire Police for their role in the arrests.

He added: "This latest operation is a clear signal that abuse of the immigration system will not be tolerated."
