A council-led project to improve walking and cycling in central Maidenhead has been completed.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’s work meant a pedestrianised section of King Street between Broadway and Keys Place has a new dedicated cycle lane.

The work had been due to finish in the autumn, but has been completed ahead of schedule.

Other spaces lying next to the path have also been altered so businesses can introduce cafe-style seating if they wish, subject to relevant licences being given.

Geoff Hill, the council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Creating a cleaner and greener borough supporting our local economy, and enabling our residents to live healthier lives, are two of the aims in our Council Plan.

“These works have been designed to do just that, improving the choices for residents to visit Maidenhead town centre in a sustainable way, while also supporting local businesses for a prosperous and vibrant Maidenhead.”

The work was funded by the Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which had received money from the government’s Local Growth Fund.
