A new care home could be built on land at a Leicester golf course.

An application has been made for a 72-bed home off Gartree Road in Stoneygate, on land owned by The Leicestershire Golf Club.

Applicant Morrison Community Care told Leicester City Council the site next to the course is “surplus to the club’s requirements” according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The sale would fund a new irrigation system which the club needs to raise £1m for, said the developer, and help preserve the wider course “for the next century”.

Morrison Community Care also said the three-storey L-shaped facility “would help meet the care needs of the local community” in light of a national shortage of care facilities.

Public consultation

As well as bedrooms and shared living and dining spaces, there would also be communal areas on each floor which would include a cafe, bar, gym and hairdressers.

Ground floor homes would come with private patios, while those living on the first and second floor would have access to communal patio areas and gardens.

A new access road would be built off Gartree Road.

A public consultation on the plan will run until Tuesday, October 8, with a decision expected by the end of November.
