Organisations across West Yorkshire have appealed for donations to help Jamaica and other Caribbean islands which were hit by Hurricane Melissa last week.

At least 67 people have died as a result of Melissa, with widespread damage caused to property and the natural environment.

The Jamaican National Council in Huddersfield and the Jamaica Society in Leeds are among the groups asking for donations including non-perishable foods, toiletries and batteries for people affected by the category-five hurricane.

Torches, nappies, bedding, cots and mosquito repellent have also been requested.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Kirklees councillor Amanda Pinnock said: "Huddersfield has a large Jamaican population from the Windrush generation who have families, loved ones and friends impacted by the disaster.

"Some have been unable to contact their families since the hurricane hit and understandably are very worried about their safety.

"Those affected desperately need our immediate help. Please do give generously".

Speaking last week, Leeds City Council leader James Lewis said: "Our hearts go out to the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean as we see the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa.

"I know that many people in Leeds have longstanding family and community ties to Jamaica, and this is an anxious time for many.

"Our residents who are affected and their loved ones in Jamaica are in our thoughts."
