MP quits council roles to focus on Westminster

Lee Dillon has quit his councillor roles to concentrate on Westminster

Newbury MP Lee Dillon has announced he will stand down from his roles on two Berkshire councils to concentrate on his work in Westminster.

Mr Dillon was elected as a Liberal Democrat MP at last year's general election and said representing Thatcham on West Berkshire and Thatcham Town councils had been "one of the greatest honours".

"Together, we've navigated many challenges and I'm proud of what we've achieved for Thatcham," he said.

He served as West Berkshire Council's leader from May 2023 until January 2024, when he took a sabbatical from the role before quitting in April 2024.

His successor as council leader, Jeff Brooks, said Dillon was a "tremendously effective councillor".

"He must now concentrate on making a real difference to our district through his work at Westminster and we will continue our excellent symbiotic relationship with him as the MP, improving our lovely area for all our residents," he continued.

By-elections will be held to elect Mr Dillon's successors on both councils.
