Free football sessions are being held every Friday in Barrow throughout August

Young people are being offered free football coaching sessions throughout August, following the success of the Lionesses' triumph at the Euros.

Under-18s in Cumbria can attend the free sessions every Friday at the Barrow Astro Turf Pitches, in Barrow Park.

Those looking to attend are asked to bring a football and a refillable water bottle with them.

Westmorland and Furness Council said the success of Lioness Georgia Stanway, who is from Barrow, showed the importance of grassroots football.

Councillor Tony Callister said: "With Georgia Stanway once again flying the flag for the Furness-area and inspiring the next generation, this programme is about more than football, it's about giving every young person the chance to be active, feel included and aim high."

The Free Friday Football scheme has been relaunched following its success last year and has been designed to give everyone the chance to get involved and win prizes.

The project is being run in partnership with the Furness Youth Work Partnership (FYWP).

FYWP chair Cath Corkill said the organisation was proud to be working with the council to offer the free football sessions.

"Through sport and youth work, we're supporting physical and mental wellbeing while strengthening connections across our community," she said.

The 50-minute sessions take place each Friday at 17:00 BST, 18:00 and 19:00.
